South London-based group, Giant Folk, subtly weaves folk-inspired lyrics and sensibility with the complex harmony and rhythmic devices of modern jazz.
With the majority of the group hailing from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music, the musicians consist fundamentally of a trio of vocals, electric guitar, and electric bass. The collection of musicians which originated with Rowan Flack, Tara Cunningham, and Jack Lecomber now draws from a pool of well-respected musicians from the London and Bath folk, jazz, and gypsy jazz scenes including Sol Grimshaw (guitar), Sylvan Biscoe (sax.), George Garford (sax.), and Tobie Medland (violin).
Working within the reverberant walls of All Saints Church, Tooting, the group is to play an evening of FolkJazz with inspiring, atmospheric sounds echoing through different angles of the church through the use of modern technology and synths. The evening will feature a mixture of the groups' original compositions, magical folk melodies, classic standards, and a wealth of improvisation.
The fusion of contemporary jazz with folk blended with electronic sound lends to this exciting concept.
